Edwin, I have two words for you - j. englishman. Main attraction and all-around handsome guy Edwin put on a solid show, Thursday (April 6) night at The Guvernment in Toronto, performing solo hits and classics from his I Mother Earth days like "One More Astronaut." However, it was opener englishman who stole the limelight immediately with his "Poor Lil Rockstar" routine.

He roared out of the gate with little fanfare and left the audience, who'd spent the entire performance giving englishman their rapt attention, absolutely amazed. Backed by a band that included Glueleg's Chowder (whispers were heard afterwards that new Glueleg material is being worked on, along with an unnamed solo project for Chowder), englishman powered out songs with a voice that filled the place. He bounced about enthusiastically proclaiming (more than once) "It's good to be home!"

Jeff Martin of The Tea Party hung out by the bar in the back with a large assortment of industry people, most likely wanting to catch a glimpse of what Edwin could do on his own with this, his first headlining solo tour. Edwin was stoic, but he just didn't seem to fully recapture the audience, even though they were his to begin with.

He hopped about energetically, did the trademark Edwin moves, played congas and really worked the crowd. Really, he should get around to trademarking some of that stuff - it's very unique. The fans were into it, but it never quite matched the style or energy englishman had set as the tone for the evening. Even with the stellar lighting, the solid backing band, the singable hit songs like "And You" and "Hang Ten" and Ricky Martin-esque attire, not to mention good looks, Edwin just seemed to pale in comparison to his opener. Edwin fans loved Edwin. Everyone loved j. englishman.
